Cottonwood trees in autumn colour, USA

Cottonwood Trees

Cottonwood trees need water, lots of it. This small copse relies on irrigation channels dug out by Mormon settlers when they moved into this area. Farming is no longer carried out in earnest here and the channels are falling apart and drying out. When they finally fail, water will be too hard to come by for these impressive trees to survive.
