May Tree or Hawthorn
(Crataegus monogyma)

May Tree is the only British plant to have the honour of being named after the month in which it flowers. There are many superstitions and much country-lore about the flowers of this plant, particularly concerning the dire consequences of bringing them into the house. Isolated examples living in harsh environments grow to be little more than shrubs. Yet they are the most frequently mentioned trees in Anglo-Saxon boundary charters.
