Common Spotted Orchid
(Dactylorhiza fuchsii)

Common spotted orchid carries the distinction of being one of the most common orchids in Britain. And being so, it is undoubtedly an image that comes to mind for most people when orchids are mentioned. Displays of common spotted orchids can be truly stunning, with variations in colour (from white to deep pink) and height (from 5 to 60 centimetres). They can be found on heaths, acid soils and bog land. Yet the largest displays of all will be found on old industrial sites where the ground is damp.
