Bracken
(Pteridium aquilinum)
Bracken has a long history of being harvested and used in many ways by country folk. But now these practices have died out and, as it is no longer being cut, this aggressive plant is becoming very abundant. It is unsuitable for grazing, as it is toxic to all animals, making significant changes to the composition of the blood. However, when the first splashes of yellow appear in its fronds in early autumn it all but redeems itself.
