Mountain Hare
(Lepus timidus)
Mountain hares prefer to eat low down on hillsides, moving between eating and resting places via regular runs. These run directly up slopes as opposed to the more usual traversing paths of sheep and deer. This makes it relatively easy to confirm when you are in mountain hare territory. These hares are now listed in Annex V of The EC habitats directive as a species whose taking in the wild may be subject to management measures. Which means that certain methods of capture are prohibited or restricted.
