Wasp Spider
(Argiope bruennichi)
Clearly it is the colouration and markings that give this spider the name of Wasp Spider. Widespread and quite common, these spiders spin their vertical orb webs among grasses and plants. Once spun the spider will usually wait a short distance from the centre whilst remaining attached by a signal thread. Prey is quickly wrapped in silken threads before despatching it with a venom-laced lethal bite. Protein dissolving enzymes then begin reducing the internals to a drinkable soup. Once the victim stops moving the wasp spider moves in to either suck it dry or to store it for later comsumption.
