Red Soldier Beetles
(Rhagonycha fulva)
These beetles probably got their name because their colours resemble nineteenth century military uniforms. Actually, the colours are a warning to birds and anything else that may consider them to be fair game for food. "Eat me and you'll be sorry" is what they say. They are a common sight in early-summer meadows where they gather on flowering plants and feed on an soft-bodied insects that may be there.
