Red Soldier Beetles, July, North York Moors, England.

Red Soldier Beetles
(Rhagonycha fulva)

These beetles probably got their name because their colours resemble nineteenth century military uniforms. Actually, the colours are a warning to birds and anything else that may consider them to be fair game for food. "Eat me and you'll be sorry" is what they say.

They are a common sight in early-summer meadows where they gather on flowering plants and feed on an soft-bodied insects that may be there.
