Field Grasshopper
(Chorthippus brunneus)

The field grasshopper is probably the most frequently seen grasshopper. It is amazingly variable in colour, and can be seen in green, brown and purple forms, usually with some brown or grey mottling – brown and grey being the most common form. Although specimens that are completely yellow, purple and white do sometimes occur.

This is a very active and sun-loving species that can be found wherever conditions are suitable. Males can often be seen and heard, courting females by vibrating their wings rapidly. In productive years field grasshoppers have been known to create mini swarms as they travel short distances en-mass.
