Knapweed Fritillary
(Melitaea phoebe)
Unsurprisingly this butterfly can be found in the vicinity of knapweed, the most favoured food plant of its caterpillars. In flight knapweed fritillaries can be seen gliding gracefully for extended distances before suddenly bursting into a short burst of rapid wing movements. Adult butterflies can be seen congregating to drink from wet ground. This is a behaviour that is usually seen at higher altitudes.
