Common Blue
(Polyommatus icarus)
The common blue is one of Europes’ most common butterflies. It can be found in a wide variety of grassy places up to an altitude of 2000m, wherever the larval food plant (bird’s-foot trefoil) can be found in abundance. The common blue is a useful benchmark species for identifying other members of the blues family, and any budding lepidopterist would do well to take the time to get to know this butterfly intimately.
