Smew
(Mergus albellus)
The smew's dark bill has a hooked tip and serrated edges, this helps it to hold on to fish when it catches them and also puts it into the sawbills classification. Drake smews are well-dressed little ducks that visit UK waters infrequently. Winter visitors arrive mostly from Scandinavia and Russia but freezing weather in Denmark and Holland will often encourage birds to come across from there.
