Slavonian Grebe
(Podiceps auritus)

Slavonian grebes claim pole position in the grebe attractiveness stakes. In breeding plumage this stunning looking bird is a guaranteed head turner, and it really makes the most of its golden ear tufts when displaying.

This diminutive grebe is a swimming and diving master and can easily purse a fish underwater, out of water it is a different story. Its long legs make walking difficult and this bird will rarely be seen away from water. As a consequence nest sites are found on the water's edge, usually built among reeds and grasses.
