European Robin
(Erithacus rubecula)
In 1961 the International Council for Bird Preservation (British section) was set the task of deciding upon Britain's national bird. No one would doubt that they made the right decision when the robin was chosen. This bold and gardener-friendly bird has long held a treasured place in the hearts of many people, (so much so that its name has been given to many red-breasted birds around the world). It is found just about everywhere throughout Britain and is a frequent garden visitor.
The core of British robins are resident, but are joined by other birds from northern Europe during the cold winter months. These visiting robins can be identified by their paler red plumage.
