This is what you see a fraction of a second after a long-tailed duck decides to dive. A Simpson-esque "Ha ha, you missed the duck!" may seem the most suitable response to a picture like this.

At this point I had been lying prone on bone-chilling ice, as close as I dare to an opening in a frozen lake for longer than was probably sensible, and definitely for longer than was comfortable. I reckoned that I had got as good as I was going to get as far as photographs of long-tailed ducks were concerned. So, looking for something different, I decided to try to catch the splash.
