This is a big book in every sense of the word. It's large, it's heavy, it's impressive and at $75 it's expensive. It also continues the in the vein of Light on the Land. Pursuing Art Wolfe's apparent mission to educate the globe about the extraordinary wonders that we are in real danger of losing forever.

The known conservationists Robert Redford and John H. Adams write interesting forewords. Further writing in the form of an essay at the start of each section is by Art Davidson. Who writes from personal experience and illustrates his essays with engaging anecdotes and tales of years gone by, and made me wish that I had been there.

This book is essentially about showcasing Wolfe's stunning landscape photography. Despite having a reputation as a wildlife photographer landscape is his first love, and the genre of photography at which I personally think he excels the most.

A range of environments are covered from around the globe - dessert, ocean, mountain, forest and polar. Each section has a foreword and, other than minimalist captions, this is the only text to be read. Allowing each of the 150 plus photographs to be displayed at their best (a full set of photo notes can be found at the rear of the book). As expected, the photographs are visually stunning. Sometimes too much so, and I found that occasionally the over-the-top saturation of some images was too much for me. The images and locations are truly inspiring, making me wish that I had also been privileged to see such sights.

Photography as good as this deserves the best possible standard of reproduction, (especially in a book of this price), but I was puzzled somewhat by the feel of the pages. In different parts of this book the paper texture seemed to vary, giving a differing sense of image quality from page to page. I would have preferred this to be uniform throughout.

It is a worthy mission that Wolfe is engaged in and this book will probably help to raise the consciousness of its readers to the wonders of the natural world. But at a price that probably only the already converted or Wolfe aficionados will be prepared to pay.
